‘역주행의 아이콘’으로 지난해 최고의 한 해를 보낸 걸그룹 브레이브걸스가 이르면 다음 달 컴백한다. 미니 5집 리패키지 앨범 ‘After We Ride’ 발매 이후 약 6개월 만이다.
6일 코리아헤럴드 취재 결과, 브레이브걸스는 올해 2~3월 앨범 발매를 목표로 준비에 한창이다. ‘롤린‘, ‘운전만 해‘로 역주행 바람을 일으켰고 지난해 6월 ’치맛바람‘으로 정주행에 성공하는 등 흥행 가도를 달리는 중인 가운데, 브레이브걸스가 이번 새 앨범을 통해 보여줄 색다른 매력과 독보적인 퍼포먼스에 관심이 쏠린다.
업계의 한 관계자는 “당초 브레이브걸스가 지난해 크리스마스쯤을 목표로 신곡을 발매 예정이었지만 멤버들의 일정 등으로 계획이 미뤄진 것으로 알고 있다”면서 “정확한 음반 포맷에 대해서 공개된 바는 없으나, 싱글은 아닐 것으로 예상된다”고 말했다.
또 해당 관계자에 따르면, 브레이브걸스는 이달 15일과 16일로 예정돼 있던 첫 단독 콘서트에서 특별 무대를 '깜짝 선물’로 보여줄 예정이었다. 하지만 소속사 브레이브엔터테인먼트가 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 확산 우려로 부득이하게 콘서트를 잠정 연기하게 되면서 계획이 무산되기도 했다.
브레이브걸스는 프로듀서 겸 작곡가 용감한 형제가 자신의 예명에서 이름을 따와 만들었을 정도로 애착이 큰 그룹이다. 지난 2011년 데뷔 이후, 기존 멤버들의 탈퇴와 영입이 이어지다, 2016년 완전히 새로운 멤버들로 구성된 2기가 탄생했다. 2기는 7명으로 출발했지만, 현재 민영, 유정, 은지, 유나가 남았다.
브레이브걸스는 지난해 음원차트 역주행을 계기로 대세 그룹 반열에 올랐다. 세간의 주목을 받으며, 지난 12월 데뷔 첫 ’SBS 가요대전‘ 라인업에 이름을 올렸다. 처음 참가한 ’2021 엠넷 아시안 뮤직 어워즈‘(2021 MAMA)에서 KTO 브레이크아웃 아티스트 상을 수상하기도 했다. 오는 8일 오후 3시 서울 구로구 고척 스카이돔에서 개최되는 ‘36회 골든디스크어워즈’에도 생애 첫 참석을 확정 지으며, 트로피에 한발 다가섰다.
한편, 브레이브걸스 소속사인 브레이브엔터테인먼트도 바쁜 한 해를 보낼 예정이다. 한 업계 관계자는 브레이브 수장 용감한 형제가 브레이브걸스를 이을 걸그룹 론칭에 박차를 가할 예정이라고 귀띔했다. 다만 대형 기획사들의 4세대 걸그룹 데뷔 경쟁이 예고되면서, 데뷔 시기를 놓고 심사숙고 중이다.
또한 서울시 광진구에 위치한 신사옥에서 새로운 도약에 나설 계획이다. 해당 관계자는 “용감한 형제가 이끄는 블록체인 스트리밍 서비스 플랫폼 뮤직브로(mu·bro, ㈜음악형제들)를 시작으로 오는 10월까지 브레이브엔터테인먼트 역삼동·서초동 사옥 2곳의 임직원까지 모두 입주를 마치게 될 것”이라고 말했다.

[Exclusive] Brave Girls eyes return with new album as early as February
Brave Girls, a K-pop girl group that rose to surprise stardom from the brink of disbandment, is gearing up for the release of a new album sometime between February and March, an industry source told The Korea Herald on Thursday.
“Brave Girls previously planned to drop new songs around the Christmas season. However, the schedule has been delayed,“ the source said, adding that the upcoming album type is undecided, but is unlikely to be a single.
The four-piece act was also thinking about presenting a “surprise performance”for its fans at its first-ever concert as a group this month. But Brave Entertainment, the agency behind the girl group, decided to temporarily postpone the event amid growing concerns about COVID-19.
The group debuted with the single “The Difference” in April 2011, but failed to gain instant popularity at the time. The group was formed by Brave Brothers, who has produced songs for such big-name K-pop artists as Big Bang, now-disbanded Sistar and Brown Eyed Girls.
Things turned around for the Brave Girls last year when their songs “Rollin” and “We Ride,” which were released in 2017 and 2020 respectively were not only back on the charts but topping them. The songs dominated online music charts and streaming platforms and following the success, the girl group dropped its five-track EP named “Summer Queen” in June, with the title track “Chi Mat Ba Ram,” that translates into the swish of a skirt, in both Korean and English.
Brave Girls won the KTO Breakout Artist award at the Mnet‘s Asian Music Awards held in December. The group is also set to appear on the Golden Disc Awards, one of the most prestigious music awards in the country, airing live on JTBC at 3 p.m., Saturday.
In the meantime, 2022 is likely to be another busy year for the girl group’s agency. Brave Entertainment is getting ready to launch a new girl group, according to the same source. The number of members and the exact date of its debut remain veiled, however, as a flood of new K-pop groups are already scheduled to make their debut this year.
The company is also set to move into a brand new 10-story building located the middle of Junggok Furniture Street in Seoul, the source added. The new headquarters has a total floor area of 420.8 square meters and sits on a 1,269.7 square-meter lot. The property‘s value after constuction is estimated at around 25 billion won ($16.7 million), according to local real estate agents.
