The main opposition Liberty Korea Party on Monday unveiled a set of reform measures including the shake-up of its governing body following its huge defeat in last week’s local elections.

The move came after the conservative party won only two of the 17 big-city mayoral and gubernatorial races in the June 13 local elections. It also secured only one parliamentary seat in the by-elections held simultaneously with the polls.

“From this moment, the Liberty Korea Party will kick off the process to streamline the governing body,” Kim Sung-tae, the floor leader of the party, who also doubles as the party’s interim chief, told reporters.

He added that the party plans to invite an outside figure to manage the post-election emergency situation and could consider changing its name.

The Liberty Korea Party has been gripped by a sense of crisis since the election defeat pointed to low public trust in the party. The party even failed to win major seats in some of its traditional conservative strongholds, rekindling a row over its future path.

The Liberty Korea Party is still reeling from the fallout of the ousting of former President Park Geun-hye over a corruption scandal.

Hong Joon-pyo, chairman of the Liberty Korea Party, resigned last week over the election defeat.

Despite the party’s announcement, it is not certain whether party officials would welcome the floor leader’s reform measures.

Some party members claimed that Kim is not free from responsibility for the election failure.

They also said that it is better to hold a party convention at an early date to elect new leadership, rather than setting up an emergency committee. (Yonhap)
