The country's top automaker Hyundai Motor Co. and its affiliate Kia Motors Corp. have been ordered to recall over 160,000 cars for problems with brake light switches, the transportation ministry said Wednesday.

The faulty light switch could stop the brake lights from illuminating even when drivers step on the brake pedal, but it can also cause the cruise control not to work properly, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

It may also cause the push-to-start button to fail to work properly. The same problems recently led to a recall of over 1.8 million cars in the United States alone.

The recall affects 115,326 Hyundai Avante compacts, Santa Fe sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and Veracruz SUVs from 2008 to 2011.

Also subject to the recall are 47,183 units of Kia vehicles from 2010 to 2011.

Free repair services will be available for both Hyundai and Kia cars at their respective service centers from Thursday, the ministry said. (Yonhap News)
