An appellate court in Seoul on Thursday upheld a 12-year prison term for a college student charged with killing his girlfriend in anger at her texting with another man.

The student, surnamed Lee, was convicted of strangling his girlfriend to death during an argument that occurred last November when he saw her sending a KakaoTalk message to another man, according to court officials.

KakaoTalk is a popular mobile-phone message service in South Korea.

"It may seem as though he killed her by accident, but the original sentence of 12 years was appropriate as circumstances show he erased her call history with him from her cell phone and covered her body with a blanket on her bed before leaving the crime scene," the Seoul High Court said in its ruling.

The 21-year-old Lee had begun dating the victim after meeting her at his part-time job last year, but was disgruntled that she often compared him to her previous boyfriends and kept in touch with another man. (Yonhap News)

서울고법 형사6부(정형식 부장판사)는 다른 남자와 카카오톡 메시지를 주고받는데 격분해 여자친구를 살해한 혐의(살인)로 구속기소된 대학생 이모(21)씨에 대한 항소심 선고공판에서 1심과 마찬가지로 징역 12년을 선고했다고 2일 밝혔다.

이씨는 지난해 서울시내 한 주차장에서 아르바이트하다 만난 A씨와 교제하던 중 여자친구가 걸핏하면 자신을 예전 남자친구들과 비교하고 다른 남자와 연락을 계속하는데 불만을 품어왔다.

그러던 중 지난해 11월 심야영화를 함께 본 뒤 새벽에 A씨 자취방에 갔다가 A씨 가 자기 몰래 다른 남자에게 카카오톡 메시지를 보내는 모습을 보고는 화가 나 말다툼을 벌인 끝에 A씨를 목 졸라 숨지게 했다.

재판부는 "이씨의 범행은 우발적인 것으로 보이지만 A씨의 휴대전화에서 자신과 의 통화 목록을 삭제한 뒤 시신을 침대에 눕혀 이불을 덮어놓고 현장을 떠나는 등 범행 이후 정황이 좋지 않은 점에 비춰 징역 12년을 선고한 원심은 적절하다"고 판단했다.
