South Africa’s largest trade union has accused as upstart rival of using witchcraft to boost recruiting.
Tensions between the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union are running high, and rank and file workers are taking the allegation seriously.
The two unions, NUM and AMCU are fighting for control among workers at the world’s biggest platinum mine, run by Impala Platinum.
“One of the tools which is used strongly is ‘muti’ and members of NUM believe that AMCU had a “very strong ‘sangoma’” NUM’s General Secretary Franc Baleni said in an interview with Reuters on Thursday.
Muti or traditional medicines, made from ingredients that can include plants and animal parts, is an important practice for South Africans who seek traditional cures for ailments ranging from rashes to erectile dysfunction. It also widely believed to have magical powers, such as bringing good fortune in love and business.
Meanwhile, AMCU officials denied that they are using witchcraft.
“There is no one among us who is using muti or sangomas. It is rubbish that he is saying. We uphold Christian principles, we don’t use sangomas,” said AMCU General Secretary Jeff Mphahlehle.

남아프리카 광산노동조합(NUM)과 광업•건설 노동협회(AMCU)의 긴장이 고조되고 있는 가운데 일반 노동자들은 주술사용에 대한 의혹을 심각하게 여기고 있다.
두 노동조합은 현재 세계 최고의 백금 광산의 주도권을 두고 경쟁을 벌이고 있는 중이다.
NUM의 사무총장인 프랑크 발레니는 “무티(주술의가 주는 약)는 가장 흔히 쓰인 수법 중 하나다. 실제 NUM의 노조 회원들은 경쟁단체인 AMCU가 강력한 주술사를 가지고 있다고 믿고 있다”고 로이터와의 인터뷰에서 말했다.
무티는 남아프리카에서 전통적으로 동•식물을 원료로 만든 약으로 발진부터 발기부전까지 두루 효험을 발휘한다고 믿어져 왔다. 남아프리카인들은 무티가 연애와 일 등에도 행운을 불러온다고 믿는다.
한편 AMCU 관계자들은 주술의 사용을 전면적으로 부인했다.
“우리 중 누구도 약이나 주술사를 부린 적이 없다. 그가 하는 말은 다 거짓이다. 우리는 기독교의 원리를 추구한다”고 AMCU의 사무총장 제프 파흐레레는 말했다.
