A 19-year-old University of Maryland college student was arrested after he allegedly threatened to go on a shooting rampage, police said.
Alexander Song, of Fulton, Md., allegedly posted a threat on two Web sites that said, "I will be on a shooting rampage tomorrow on campus" and "hopefully I kill enough people to make it to national news." He warned in the posts to "stay away from the mall tomorrow at 1:30," campus police said.
A spokesman for the University of Maryland police department said Song allegedly posted threats Saturday night on reddit.com and the chat site Omegle.
Police said they linked the posts to Song and searched the night for him. He was arrested on campus around 10 a.m. Sunday and held for psychiatric evaluation, WTOP, Washington, reported Song was charged with a misdemeanor for allegedly "disturbing the orderly conduct of the activities, administration or classes" at the College Park campus. The university moved to immediately suspend Song's student status and he was banned from campus.
Capt. Marc Limansky, spokesman for the campus police, said it does not appear Song had access to any weapons, The Baltimore Sun reported.
영재반 학생, '전국적 뉴스'될 총기난사 계획
미국 메릴랜드대에 재학중인 한인 학생이 인터넷을 통해 캠퍼스내에 총기를 난사할 것이라고 위협하는 글을 올렸다가 경찰에 체포됐다.
메릴랜드대 경찰에 따르면 이 대학 2학년인 알렉산더 송(19)군은 지난 10일 한 인터넷 웹사이트에 "전국적 뉴스가 될 만큼 많은 사람들을 죽일 것"이라며 총기 난사를 예고하는 글을 올렸다.
송군은 이 글을 통해 "내일(11일) 오후 1시30분 몰에서 떨어져 있으라"라는 경고도 덧붙였다.
경찰은 이 같은 사실을 신고를 통해 접수하고 11일 오전 10시께 학교 인근에서 송 군을 긴급체포했다.
송군은 병원에서 정신감정을 받고 있으며 대학 당국은 송군의 캠퍼스 출입을 금 지하는 정학처분을 내렸고 경찰 조사 결과에 따라 추가 조치를 취할 방침이라고 현지 언론이 보도했다.
대학에 따르면 송군은 과학과 기술이 사회에 어떤 영향을 미치는지를 연구하는 `젬스톤 프로그램'이라는 영재 학생 그룹에 속해 있다.
