A 5-year-old boy was confined to the van of a childcare center for nearly seven hours due to his teacher’s carelessness.
The boy was locked in the car from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 22 near a lot beside the center, which the child attends on Jeju.
The teacher and bus driver at the childcare center closed the door of the school bus without carefully checking the number of students and the teacher did not call to ask his parents whether the child would be coming to the center or not.
The director of the center said, “The teacher brought the child from the van at 10:30 a.m. after calling roll and found out he was missing,” but when asked to view CCTV, reversed his statement to “the driver discovered him in the afternoon.”
The mother of the child said “It is heartbreaking thinking that my child had no sip of water on a freezing and rainy day, he wet himself because he was trembled with fear” in an interview with the Yonhap news agency.
“The center reported my husband to police when he went to complain about the incident and they finally admitted and apologized for the mistake after we reported them to a related institution,” she added.

5세 원아 어린이집 승합차에 7시간 갇혀
제주의 한 어린이집 승합차에 5세 원아가 7시간 가까이 방치돼 있었다는 사실이 뒤늦게 알려져 논란이 일고 있다.
생후 39개월 된 A군은 지난 22일 자신이 다니는 제주시 노형동 모 어린이집 인근 동산 공터에 세워진 등하교용 25인승 승합차에 오전 9시부터 오후 3시30분까지 6 시간 반 동안 갇혀 있었다.
담당 교사와 운전기사 모두 승하차 인원을 제대로 확인하지 않은 채 차 문을 닫 았고, 담임교사 역시 A군이 등원하지 않았는데도 학부모에게 전화로 통학 여부를 묻 지 않아 일어난 일이었다.
특히 어린이집 원장은 당초 A군의 부모에게 '담임교사가 오전 10시30분에 출석체크를 하다가 A군이 없어진 사실을 알고 차에서 데려왔다'고 말했다가 폐쇄회로(CC )TV 등을 보여줄 것을 요구하자 '오후에 다시 출근한 운전기사가 발견했다'고 말을 바꾼 것으로 알려졌다.
A군의 어머니(35)는 연합뉴스와 통화에서 "비가 오고 추운 날 차에 갇혀 물 한 모금 못 마시고 두려움에 떨다가 옷에 소변까지 본 아이를 생각하면 너무 속상하다"
며 "어린이집은 항의하러 간 남편을 경찰에 신고하는 등 적반하장격으로 대처하다가 관련기관에 신고를 한 후에야 잘못을 인정, 사과했다"고 말했다.
