A film about American boxing icon Muhammad Ali will be screened at the American Center on Feb. 17.

The 2001 movie “Ali” is a biographical film directed by Michael Mann and starring Will Smith, Jamie Foxx and Jon Voight. It tells the story of the legendary heavyweight boxer, reflecting his role in American sports, politics and social history and his continued fights against racism and the Vietnam War.

The film also discusses the great turmoil in American society following the assassination of two African American leaders, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr.

The film was chosen by the American Center this month to commemorate Black History Month and will be presented by Osborne D. Burks from the U.S. Embassy to moderate and lead the follow-up discussions.

The monthly American Cinema Evenings provide Korean youths an opportunity to explore American culture, history and society through film. The films are selected to help Korean students understand particular American themes.

The screening will be held at the PA American Center Korea at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul from 5 p.m. Reservations must be made by Feb. 13 to AmericanCenterKorea@state.gov.or or (02) 397-4713 with the applicant’s name, school, department and contact details. Admission will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis as seats are very limited.
